A couple of weeks ago, after Toby finished up an audition at UCLA, we headed over to Olvera Street, a Mexican marketplace in downtown Los Angeles. This is a place Toby has been wanting to take me since we moved here, and he was super happy that we were finally taking the time to do it, since I usually insist we just go to the beach.

There was some kind of celebration going on in when we got there, so we were treated to a show of performers dressed in bright colors, dancing under a rainbow of festive flags that fluttered in the breeze.

Next we strolled into the marketplace itself, a cute little red brick alley lined with restaurants and shops. It felt like a mix of the River Walk in San Antonio and any marketplace that I've been to in South America.

It turns out Olvera Street is the perfect place for a date. There are lots of historical buildings and monuments to walk through and learn about, dozens of cute little Mexican restaurants to choose from, music and tasty smells wafting through the air, and people watching galore. The weather was verging on chilly when we were there, too, which prompted plenty of hand holding and side-by-side walking. As we ate lunch and listened to a mariachi band, I commented that if I squinted and looked at the marketplace from a certain angle, I could almost feel like I was back in Costa Rica or Peru, eating at a little cafe and practicing my Spanish. It was like being transported to another place and another time for a couple of hours; a nice little break from the hustle and bustle of the city. Though on the car right home, I remembered that I do love that hustle and bustle as well.

If you're in the LA area, or even just visiting for a couple of days, I would definitely recommend bopping on over to Olvera Street, even if it's just a quick jaunt. I think you'll find it well worth your time!

Happy Monday!
