You may or may not remember that in October, Toby and I headed north to Morro Bay
to spend the night with our friends Brent and Katie, who were ending an epic bike journey down the Pacific Coast. It's an adorable little town with a marina and a giant rock and a massive beach, and we loved it. We left swearing we would return sometime soon.
Six months later, we finally kept our word.
I have a lot of busy friends
. Some might call them workaholics, but I call them extremely impressive people. They work days, nights, and weekends, and produce some really great stuff. Even the most creative of geniuses need a break every now and then, though. Cue Morro Bay.
See those clumps? Those are adorable otters, wrapped in seaweed, floating around and napping. Too cute to handle.
We stayed at Gull Cottage
, an adorable, cozy beach house nestled near the hills, an easy bike ride or walk away from the beach.
On one side of the doorway, Adam and Eliza's neat and tidy sleeping space...
...and immediately on the other side of the door, my explosion. You know how I do.
It's amazing the amount of good a weekend getaway can do for the soul. This trip was the aloe to my homesickness sunburn; cooling and relieving. A deep breath. Not a cure, but a way to temper the sting of some of the sadness I have felt in the past week as I miss my friends and family in Minnesota. In need of distractions? Look no further than helmetless (sorry Mom) bike rides, sunset romps, and reincarnations of childhood past times.
This one is called "Album Cover"
The best Play-doh creation I've ever seen. Eff you, Eliza.
Nickysaurus, playing the cello...wait. No. Upright bass?
Story behind this one: Nick and Kelly once stayed up for hours deciding which zoo animals each person on this trip was most like. Eliza is a bear cub, Adam is an ant, Kelly is a frog, Nick is a worm, Toby is an otter, and I am a giraffe (and obviously the leader of the free world...I mean, look at me).
The best part of the weekend? Going to the beach on Saturday, seeing brightly colored objects floating around in the sky, and realizing that the Morro Bay Kite Festival was happening. It's like the universe planned that shit.
Toby remained stoic and refused to budge, even when attacked multiple times by this giant kite
No beach day is complete without Goldfish. No. I changed my mind. No DAY is complete without Goldfish.
It was One Of Those Awesome Weekends. I went camera crazy and took a million pictures (click here to see the rest of the photos on my Flickr
). As my friend Eliza put it, I "captured the experience...thoroughly". I wanted to remember it. These are the kinds of memories that last, you know? And I'm really good at being nostalgic, but I don't want that to get in the way of creating new, amazing memories in the present.
We ended the weekend with a quick stop in San Luis Obispo for a meal and to ooh and ahh at how dang cute that town is. Think Boulder mixed with any midwestern college town Main Street. Boutiques, students, ragamuffins, tree-lined roads, a little creek, delicious restaurants...you get the picture. You didn't? Here, let me show you (mooooan, that was so corny):
Gum Alley in San Luis Obispo. Nomnomnom.
Preach it, sista.
Successful weekend, Team. Here's to many more.
Happy Hump Day, fizzles.
