A few weeks ago, after a steep and grueling morning hike, Kalen and I spent the day in the car, traveling up a largely uneventful stretch of Highway 101. Our destination was Santa Cruz; this being a spontaneous trip, we booked a hotel room en route and spent the rest of the journey talking about love, religion, life, wanderlust...all the typical road trip fare.
As we neared our destination, we compared sunset time to our arrival time, and decided to race the sun to the coast. We won, but just barely. We pulled into the parking area of Salinas River State Beach, hopped out of the car, and I breathed in the cold, salty air as Kalen took off over the dunes, sprinting to the ocean. Nothing makes spending several hours on the road more worthwhile than a spectacular sunset waiting at the end.
